Paul Cantwell

Paul Cantwell is a Partner in Oliver Wyman’s Finance, Risk and Public Policy practices. Originally from London but now based in New York, his clients have been the major international banks where he has focused on large scale implementations of what in recent years have been primarily regulatory driven programs.

His relevant experience includes:

  • Capital and entity strategy for a large capital markets firm’s non US businesses. This required optimizing for financial, tax, and operational and regulatory risk appetites in migrating from a platform that had occurred as a result of multiple legacy acquisitions.
  • Legal entity rationalization, lead the assistance to an international bank in aligning business function, capital and risk to entities. This included the processes and governance for entity retirement.
  • Finance transformation. For a large broker dealer lead the engagement to re-align the finance functions to reduce breaks, drive down cycle times and constraints on the business.
  • Regulatory support. For a major broker dealer, worked with the clients to identify emerging regulatory requirements, develop tactical and strategic responses together with a targeted communication program to the regulators.
  • Program planning. For several large broker dealers, structured major change programs addressing strategy, people, process and operational impacts. Created business cases and estimating models to identify the costs and allocate budgets together with tangible milestones to measure progress.
  • Recover and Resolution planning. For multiple bank and non-bank SIFIs has lead the consulting assistance to create resolution plans. This has included both quantitative and narrative aspects and has included drafting material elements of the regulatory submissions.
  • Program implementation. For a global bank, lead the global program to introduce the Euro which was mandated with an immoveable deadline that touched every business line and virtually business line.
  • Data architecture and integrity. Paul originally trained as DBA early in his career and has worked on several data intense programs to try and tame the entropy that impacts most cross functional and entity initiatives.

Prior to joining Oliver Wyman Paul was a MD at Alvarez & Marsal and Partner at Accenture. In his 30 years career he has assisted banks and exchanges in all major geographies.
